The water in a dam that generates electricity possesses
both potential energy and kinetic energy.
You have learned that different forms of energy can be classified into two groups--potential energy and kinetic energy. Many objects possess potential or stored energy. for example, the water stored in the reservoir of a dam possesses potential energy. Water is channeled to flow and fall on to turbine blades as the generators in a dam's powerhouse. when this happens, the stored energy that water possesses is changed into kinetic energy. The work done by this energy in motion results in the production of electricity which is also a kind of kinetic energy.
